Mike McClure got his start in the 90s playing in Stillwater, Oklahoma, where he was a founding member of legendary Red Dirt band, The Great Divide. The band signed with Atlantic, and Garth Brooks recorded one of McClure’s songs. After a decade with The Great Divide, McClure went out on his own and released ten albums, many with famed producer and engineer Joe Hardy (Steve Earl, ZZ Top). He has produced albums for the Turnpike Troubadours, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Kaitlin Butts, Jason Boland & the Stragglers, and many others. If you look closely at the last several years of McClure’s life, you will see there has been a life-altering awakening for the singer, songwriter, artist, and producer. Marked by reckoning, renewal and growth – some by choice, some by fate – the result is felt in his latest solo project Looking Up. The highly acclaimed album released in September 2020, found McClure getting sober, wrestling with insecurity, and finding new love for both himself and others, as he discovers the best way to live is to live in truth and to be present, no matter what. McClure was recently inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.
Forever an inspired artist and songwriter, Mike McClure released a new album with The Great Divide in 2022, and also formed a duo with his wife Chrislyn Lawrence, under the name Crow and Gazelle. Their songs—built around their entangled close harmonies and sparse, reverent acoustic instrumentation—are wrought out of the love they have come to find for themselves and for each other. Their debut outing, As Above Now So Below, which will be released on April 26, 2024, is an album centered on acceptance and growth in the face of pain… and on embracing the sacred nature within each and every one of us.
“Our coming together has created a whole new path for us both. And our live shows just keep getting better and more powerful. It’s more than just two people in a band, and it’s so much deeper than just us. We gather around one microphone, while our spirits and voices envelop each other, and the audience—it’s the very essence of interconnected harmony. I think our music and our shows are a reflection of the human potential – to allow our full range of emotions, flowing from grief to joy, held by another’s understanding. It’s part of some bigger cosmic contract. So we’re doing everything we can to honor it.”
The debut single from Crow and Gazelle, (featuring Mike McClure) “Take It Away,” is out now.
“”Take It Away” is a plea to not give up in the face of what seems like overwhelming odds. Take just one more breath, do just one more thing, and that’s the first step to healing. It features both Lawrence and McClure leading the vocals, but also harmonizing throughout. It’s beautiful, and poignant… “ – Twangville
“Whatever might be left of Mike McClure’s time, one thing is certain: … he will remain a pioneer in the landscape of Red Dirt and alternative country for decades to come.”
